Western North Carolina boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage. This area was once home to such noted writers as Carl Sandburg, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. World-class boxing champion Jack Dempsey also sought the tranquility and isolation of these hills, setting up a training camp in Hendersonville. Even today, from the Champion Hills property, you can still see a well-preserved Indian cave, a remnant of the native Cherokee who used these hills for hunting and recreation.
